Whitstable Harbour in Kent, UK, is one of my favourite inspirations for painting. It is full of character and the fishing boats are quite challenging to depict. Around the harbour are oyster sellers, fish market, fishermens’ huts, and a Saturday market. Many of the old fishermens’ huts have been converted into holiday lets. As a result they have lost some character but at least they are being conserved and put to good use. Sometimes a Thames barge moors up and is available for trips round the estuary. There is a big tidal range here and as a result, twice a day the boats sit in mud, giving an altogether different view. This is a place to wander slowly, perhaps sitting down for coffee or lunch in the open air cafe.

Whitstable is a favourite of day-trippers and can get very busy at times. Do go there, especially if you are an artist – you will find much to paint and it is a good centre for venturing into the other towns of north Kent.
